Urban Violence Traumatic Stress Response Syndrome (UVTS) is a concept developed by Dr. Erwin Randolph Parsons. UVTS is not a diagnosis that you can find in the DSM-V; rather, it is a concept that explains how much urban youth become afflicted with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. This training will cover the causes, symptoms, and treatments of Urban Violence Traumatic Response Syndrome. It is also worth noting that although we see this most often in inner-city youth, it can occur anytime a youth is being raised in a violent and chaotic environment with insufficient parental guidance and supervision.

Current research in the field of trauma is showing that treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder cannot be approached in a “one size fits all “manner. The effects of trauma vary greatly depending on the type of trauma, as well as the severity and duration of the trauma. There has been rapid advancement in formulating specific treatment approaches for specific types of traumatized populations. This training will examine the unique symptoms and specific treatment protocols that can be utilized to help victims of sex trafficking, people that have lost loved ones to murder, and children that have endured war, slavery, or political terror, as well as some other unique trauma populations.

Adolescents in the Juvenile Justice System have substantially higher rates of Mental Disorders than those in the general population. It is reported that over 75% of these adolescents suffer from disorders either detected or undetected. Anxiety and Mood Disorders are among the most common.
